FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make an appointment?

You can easily request an appointment by visiting the Contact page of this website. There, you’ll find a form to send a message directly to me. I will respond to your message within 24 hours and offer to schedule an initial session. For general enquiries, feel free to email me on info@drmelaniesilove.com

What happens in the first session?

The first session lasts an hour and is an opportunity for us to discuss your current life situation, the challenges that have brought you to therapy and the issues you would like to address. You are also welcome to raise any questions or concerns you may have about individual therapy and whether this is the right approach for you.

I offer three introductory sessions to allow us both to determine if we are a good fit and can work together. If I cannot help you, I will refer you to an alternative practitioner.

If we decide to move forward, we will establish a clear therapeutic contract. This will outline important aspects of our work together, including session times, confidentiality and payment and cancellation policies.

Will Insurance Providers or Medical Aids pay for therapy?

Many insurance providers or medical aids reimburse a portion of therapy fees. It is the client’s responsibility to check with their provider in advance how many sessions are covered and what percentage will be reimbursed. If needed, I can provide you with the necessary documentation to submit with your claim.

What about virtual consultations?

Yes, I offer secure online therapy sessions, allowing you to connect from the comfort of your own space. We can use video, audio, or a combination of both, depending on what feels most comfortable for you. I will send a secure link before each session.

When working online, it’s important to find a quiet space where you can speak freely without interruptions. Whether it’s a room at home, your office or another peaceful environment, choose a place with good light where you feel safe and your conversation will remain confidential.

How long will it take for therapy to work?

The process and duration of therapy varies depending on your individual needs. Therapy, whether short-term or long-term, is an investment in your future psychological well-being and personal growth. Some issues, like adjusting to a new city or job, can often be addressed in a limited number of sessions. However, more complex challenges, like exploring your inner world, healing from childhood trauma or coming to terms with major life changes, may require a more extended period, sometimes months or even years of work.

The pace of therapy is different for everyone and it’s important to give yourself the time you need for meaningful exploration and healing. For more details on the types of therapy I offer, please visit the ‘Services’ page.

How is therapy different from talking to friends and family about my problems?

While support from family and friends is invaluable, therapy offers something quite different. It provides a safe space where you can freely speak your truth without being judged and without the fear of hurting or disappointing others. You are free to express your thoughts and feelings openly, knowing you will be met with compassion, understanding and objectivity.

Unlike conversations with loved ones, therapy provides the opportunity for deep, unbiased listening without interruptions, advice or pressure to take a particular course of action. As your therapist, my role is to offer a supportive presence as you explore yourself and your relationships in an atmosphere of safety and confidentiality. This process can lead to a new sense of independence, confidence and trust in yourself.
